Why Keto Smart, you ask? True, the standard Keto Diet already exists, but did you know that the official medical ketogenic diet includes 90% fats?! This fat percentage is far too high for our health over the long term. And even the more common approach, at 70% fats, is still too high.
Hence, I created my KETOSMART® program with 50% healthy fats, 35% protein and 15% glucids.
Q: Why do we lose so much weight and so quickly on KETOSMART®?
A: Weight is not only the result of “calories ingested” and “calories burned”. Other elements impact this equation, and this is where the ketogenic diet comes into play.
The body needs carbohydrates (sugars), lipids (fats) and proteins in order to function. When carbs are very low — as on the ketogenic diet — the liver begins to manufacture ketone bodies from fat stores in the body. The body is thus said to be in “ketosis”: it turns into a fat “burning” machine. Ketone bodies become the main source of energy for most of our cells. This change occurs on average between two and four days after starting the diet.
Q: Are fruits forbidden?
A: Fruit is a big discussion when it comes to keto! Whether or not fruit is allowed depends on the level of the program you are following. So:
Keto Medical: fruits are forbidden
Strict Keto: only certain berries (raspberries, blackberries, strawberries), avocado, tomato, olives, and coconut. All these in very small quantities because the sugar allowance is super low.
Keto Smart: Enjoy fruit every day, with a focus on avocados, berries, and olives. At 15% of your daily carb intake, you can absolutely eat an orange or another fruit, since the menus are keto enough to catch up. Craving pineapple? True, it’s high in fructose (fruit sugar) but 4 slices will not affect your low ketosis state, so enjoy it!
Q: What do you drink on a keto diet?
A: Firstly, we use my new organic bamboo thermos tumbler from @liliwarrioroff 😊
Keto Medical & Strict: In order to reach the recommended fat levels, keto diets often advise “drinking” coconut oil, in particular MCT oil (Medium Chain Triglycerides).
MCT oil is particularly suitable for people who have difficulty digesting or metabolizing fat, as its digestion does not require the action of the pancreas or gallbladder. It is absorbed into the bloodstream pretty quickly, and so some gurus even recommend putting it in your coffee, which I find quite extreme!
Keto Smart: water and tea, and most importantly, no sodas, fruit juices or other sugary drinks. I do not recommend the famous coffee with MCT oil because I haven’t found serious studies showing its effectiveness. On the other hand, a body in ketosis generates more toxins, so you actually have to drink more water to eliminate.
