That’s it! You’ve just realized that after the long festive season of eating, drinking and being merry, your body has hit its threshold. A healthy detox is in order! The endless feasting with family and friends has caught up with you…not to mention the short nights and the absence of (or almost no) physical activity. After all this indulgence, your body has become toxic.
You’re feeling low on energy, your complexion’s a little dull…let’s reset with this simple 3-day DETOX program that will restore your glow and give you a great start to this new year!
I often suggest starting a detox on a Saturday, since it’s the beginning of the weekend which means we are not stressed out with work and have more time to pay attention to our meals, movement and mindfulness. That said, if you are ready to detox as soon as you are reading this, no need to wait for the weekend! The plan goes for 3 days, so just choose the few consecutive days this week that will work best with your schedule. And of course, even once you’ve completed your 3 days, feel free to keep up the good habits in the days that follow!
3 days is short. It is, indeed, a very short detox. Not long enough to set up habits for life (that takes at least 3 weeks), but still enough to jump-start your system and cleanse your body—much like rebooting a computer.
The 10 main principles of these 3 DETOX days:
1. No cold cuts or dairy
2. No gluten (so no bread or pasta) and no yeast
3. No alcohol
4. Lots of green or white tea
5. Sweating to remove toxins (go for activities that work up a sweat!)
6. A healthy overdose of fresh fruits and vegetables, seeds, whole grains
7. No ready-made meals
8. Favor organic produce
9. Physical activity every day (even if it’s only 30 minutes of walking!)
10. Sleep & meditation to reduce stress
Suggested Menus:
In general, favor foods with a strong detoxifying power such as lamb’s lettuce, watercress, garlic, almonds, apples, prunes, artichoke, asparagus, berries, and buckwheat.
Sample Breakfast:
- Juice of a fresh lemon in room temperature water, followed by my all-time favorite Sobacha (toasted buckwheat infusion), and then green or white tea (as much as you like).
- 2 buckwheat crepes with 1 tbsp. pure almond butter OR 1 serving of my Buckwheat Porridge
- Seasonal berries
Sample Lunch:
- Endive salad with walnuts, apples, pomegranate seeds + homemade dressing
- 1 salmon fillet, grilled with olive oil, lemon & salt
- Seasonal berries
Sample Dinner:
- Duck fillet
- Butternut squash puree with squash seeds
- 1 slice of my Paleo Bread (gluten & yeast free)
- OR
- Homemade soup (enjoy to satiety) with 2 slices of my Paleo Bread + 1 tbsp. homemade hummus
