Flat stomach: two words that make us dream, or stress…or both!
I’ve heard people say that the goal of a flat, toned stomach is unrealistic and that we should just love our bodies as they are.
Now, whilst my followers well know that I am super passionate about body positivity and being kind to ourselves, overall, I oppose this message, because it’s more about complacency than positivity. Why so? Because a well-toned stomach means abdominal muscles that support and protect your internal organs and spine.
And now that you know how important this is…
Here are 5 easy exercises to keep your abs engaged throughout the day!
- Contract your abs 5 times a day for 1-min intervals (don’t forget to breathe 🙂)
- Every time you walk through a door, contract your abs for half a second
- Every time you make a phone-call, contract your abs
- When you wake up in the morning, practice my hypopressive approach while still in your bed: inhale and inflate your stomach, then exhale and bring your abdominal muscles in against your spine.
- Before going to bed, to release negative energy accumulated throughout the day, do cross boxing: an exercise I love and which is great for letting off steam! Put on high energy music and get into sumo squat position. Without moving your hips, punch towards the right side with your left fist, and then to the left side with your right fist. Visualize destroying the stress with your punches. Connect with your abs and feel your obliques engaged in the exercise.
If you follow these simple integrative exercises, you’ll quickly discover that the secret to a flat stomach is not found in hour-long ab toning classes, but rather in regularly engaging your abs!
